YOUR VOTE MATTERS!

As musicians and music lovers, we know the power of a voice. We know how a single note can spark a movement, a song can bring people together, and that music inspires change. But here’s the thing—our power isn’t limited to our performances or playlists. One of the most impactful ways we can use our voices is by voting.

SMASH calls on all musicians and music supporters to step up and vote. Our community thrives on creativity and collaboration, but it also faces real challenges—whether it is access to healthcare, affordable housing, or the need for better support for the arts. The decisions at the ballot box shape our daily lives.

Why Musicians Need to Vote

If you’ve ever struggled to get the healthcare you need (which is likely if you are a SMASH member)—or seen a fellow musician go without because it’s too expensive—you already know the stakes. Voting allows us to push for policies that protect artists and gig workers, making healthcare more affordable and accessible. SMASH works hard to support musicians, but voting is a way to make sure those in power are doing the same. We like to say we are always trying to put ourselves out of business because we shouldn't have to exist. We believe healthcare should be a right for all, but that can’t happen if the right people are not in office.

Arts Funding Isn’t Guaranteed.

Do you love playing at local venues or seeing your favorite band perform in the park? Public funding for the arts doesn’t happen on its own—it’s influenced by the people we elect. When we vote, we’re standing up for the value of art and ensuring that future generations can experience the magic of live music, arts education, and community spaces that nurture creativity.

Affordable Housing Affects Us All.

Many of us in the music scene know how hard it’s become to afford to live and work in Seattle. Gentrification, rising rents, and the lack of affordable housing drive musicians and artists out. By voting, we have a say in how our cities grow and how housing policies benefit everyone, not just the wealthy.

Why Music Lovers Should Care, Too

You’re more than fans—you’re part of the music community. The survival of local venues, festivals, and the artists you love depends on policies that support the arts. When you vote, you’re helping ensure that artists can keep creating, that venues can keep hosting, and that the music keeps flowing.

We all love talking about the power of music to make a difference. But it’s just as important to remember that voting is a powerful way to create the world we want to live in—one where musicians can thrive, art can flourish, and communities can stay connected.

It is election day, so let’s ensure our voices are heard—not just through our songs but in our choices at the ballot box. So, musicians, music lovers, and everyone in between, VOTE.
